Facial Cosmetic Surgery

For long, cosmetic surgery has been the preferred solution for correcting physical deformity that results from disease, aging, birth defects and injury. However, in recent years, a number of men and women of varying ages are opting for facial cosmetic surgery in order to improve their appearance & reduce signs of aging.

Is Cosmetic Surgery for You?

Today, there has been a great advancement in medical devices & biomaterials. A number of facial cosmetic procedures that are used today are minimally invasive and can also be performed in a dental office-setting with the use of either intravenous or local anesthesia. Certain procedures may need the use of an outpatient/same day surgery center/hospital.

On account of their surgical & dental background, oral & maxillofacial surgeons are very uniquely qualified to perform these cosmetic procedures which involve the aesthetic & functional aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. Oral & maxillofacial surgeons undergo extensive education and training in various surgical procedures that involve soft tissue (skin & muscle) and hard tissue (bone & cartilage) and they are very finely attuned to creating the perfect balance between facial appearance & function.

The Different Procedures

Cheekbone Implants (Malar Augmentation) – These create an appearance of higher, and more prominent cheekbones &  better facial balance

Chin Surgery (Genioplasty) - This increases/reduces the chin length & projection

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) - It is generally done to set very prominent ears back and closer to the head/ change the shape/reduce the size of very large ears

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) - It removes fat & excess skin from the lower & upper  eyelids, and can be performed by itself /in conjunction with certain facial surgery procedures such as a browlift/facelift

Facelift (Rhytidectomy) - It provides a much more youthful appearance by effectively tightening the facial skin, muscles & removing excess skin. The mini facelift is a minimally-invasive technique that involves only small incisions

Facial & Neck Liposuction - Helps in sculpting the face by removing the excess fat

Neck liposuction - This is generally performed along with procedures such as genioplasty & corrective jaw surgery

Forehead/Brow Lift – The surgery is generally done along with blepharoplasty and improves brow positioning, minimizes frown lines & reduces forehead wrinkles

Lip Enhancement - Reshapes the upper & lower lip and gives a more aesthetic/youthful appearance. In addition, augmentation of the lips can be accomplished by using different materials that help to "plump" the lips, and create fullness & decrease vertical lines

Nasal Reconstruction (Rhinoplasty) - This reduces/increases the actual size of your nose, changes the shape of the bridge/tip, narrow the nostril span/or changes the angle between your upper lip & your nose

Skin Treatments

Today, there are a number of techniques to treat skin that is scarred, damaged or wrinkled. The improvement level will vary and is dependent on what the initial condition of the patient’s skin was & the procedure used:

Botox® Injections- These can reduce signs of aging by reducing wrinkles & muscle activity of the eyebrow & forehead. It is especially-effective in reducing your frown lines

Chemical Peel - The procedure involves application of a solution which causes the wrinkled/damaged top-layers of skin to get peeled and reveals new & healthier skin after it has healed. There are a number of different chemical peels- the light peel removes superficial wrinkles, a medium-depth peel & a deep-peel for much more severe conditions.

Dermabrasion - It smoothes the surface irregularities and produces a much more uniform appearance.

Laser - A special laser is used to remove the  outer layers of wrinkled/damaged skin. The new skin that appears is healthier & smoother and gives a rejuvenated, and more youthful appearance

Injectable Fillers (collagen, Restylane®, etc.) - They are synthetic/naturally-occurring materials which  are placed with small needles and help in plumping wrinkles, furrows/grooves on the skin. These results are instantaneous though the duration will vary based on the material used

The extent of change that is realized is based on the individual & the extent of that surgical procedure. Your health, age, bone structure, skin texture, healing capacity & personal habits such as alcohol consumption/smoking are the factors that could affect your surgery results.

Every procedure that is outlined here  entails a certain amount of  recovery period and you may experience some bruising, swelling &discomfort & these are all a part of the standard healing process.
